A Tree Is Identified By Its Fruit

I am the vine; you are the branches.

Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit.

When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples.

This brings great glory to my Father.

Luke 6 and John 15

Taste Your Fruit: Part Six

Do You Taste Like Greed or Gluttony & Kindness?

Luke 16: 19-26

Last week we noted that the Deadly Sin of Greed is not about wealth. Greed is about an attitude. We can say something similar about Gluttony. The Deadly Sin of Gluttony is not only overindulgence. Regardless of the amount consumed, gluttony is also being cold, callused and uncaring of those around you who do not have enough.  The story Jesus tells in our text for this week clearly suggests that when these conditions are present, when some have plenty and others do not, the Kingdom of God has not been established.

Gluttony is in our attitude about food. Those who overindulge and those who practice 'over-dieting' are both caught up in gluttony. So also those who withdraw and avoid community and seek to live in isolation. We will explore these ideas more on Sunday.

The most often used description of God is, 'God is Love.' First Corinthians 13:4 teaches us that love is kind. The spiritual fruit of kindness will overcome the sin of gluttony in our lives.

Each week through March 21st I will be contrasting the Seven Deadly Sins and the Fruit of the Spirit to help us examine our lives and determine what kind of tree we are, because Jesus said: A Tree Is Identified By Its Fruit.

This Week: Gluttony & Kindness.
